First Thoughts
Why i chose disguise
I chose Disguise because I was drawn to it and also as soon as I read the brief loads of ideas came flooding into my head and I was thinking of ways to carry these ideas out in real life. I also thought that this would be a good was to show more of my skills for example my creativity and skills in composition and researching. |

Photographer Inge Morath and New York artist Saul Steinberg engaged in a unique collaboration in the late 1950s and early 1960s by having friends and acquaintances , place paper bags drawn with fantastic faces on their heads and then posing them for photographs. In a wonderful series of ; individual and group photographs. This series of images were called masquerade. The idea of this came from Saul Steinberg through his various artworks that featured disguise. During this project, all of the models remain without an identity which created mystery in their photographs.. Saul Steinberg worked as a cartoonist in new york, using his drawing skills and her photography skills these wonderful, unique images were created. |

First experiments
EVALUATION
In These images I experimented with different types of disguise. I used an app on my phone called square size to create an effect. I think that these images were quite effective in the fact that they show a range of ideas and they all show Disguise in a way. The first image is my least favourite and i do not think this worked as well as the others because it was not focused because the movement of the bubbles. In these images i had my sister sitting on a chair in front of me and then we went through some of my ideas and we discussed what ones would be suitable to do in these conditions and the ones she was happy to model for. we then started working our way through the list. after we were ready for each image i used my phone to take the photograph. I think to improve on this for my next set of experiments I will use my digital camera to get a better quality picture.

My Inspiration
This image, by Inge Morath and Saul Steinberg, is my inspiration for my next set of images. This image has influenced me and given me ideas for my experiments and final images. I can have more than one person and i can use paper bags or something similar to give the subjects their own personalities that the viewer can see from the face they have, Also this type of image will test my skills on composition and give me the chance to decide where all the elements go within the image. This will increase my rage of skills in photography not just with a camera but the image itself and organizing the image to my standards required. I may try to recreate this image with the black and white effect. I may try to get the image as similar as I can to this original image with all of the people gathered round and on the sofa. For me this image stood out to me because of the big contrast between the black and white in this image.

Ralph Meatyard
Ralph Meatyard was an american photographer in the 1950's. Meatyard first started photography after his first child was born. Ralph Meatyard bought a camera to take pictures of his baby. Shortly after he bought the camera he joined the lexington camera club were he met Van Deren Coke who's encouragement helped Ralph Meatyard become a powerfully original photographer and helped him to be as successful as he is today. Meatyard uses masks in most of his photographs to create a world of mystery and one concerned with the ineffability of reality. Ralph Meatyard photographed his three kids and his wife, he also sometimes used his friends and their kids if necessary. |

To create these images i used photoshop to edit these images. I changed the features using the bulk, pucker and the swirl tool to change the facial features of this image. I think my worst image was the one of the boy in the bottom left hand corner because the chin smudged to much when i was trying to bulk the chin. I think the eyes in this image worked as they look really big and bold and they stand out on the face. Changing the size of the eyes and the pupils really changed the way the boy looks. I think the best photograph was the image of the girl with frizzy hair, in the bottom left right hand side of the page, because i have used all of the tools on the photo booth site to make the eyes and lips bigger and added a swirl on different parts of the face to make the photograph look slightly abstract, disguising the face.

Marier Rime ; Marier Rime used bright colours in the foreground and background. Marier Rime take photographs of women waring armour style clothing in her series of images named 'Armures' . Rime uses everyday objects to create. These represent the starting points of the reflection of the relationship between power, war and ornament. Marier Rime also takes photographs of people in masks that are in the theme of a game. This represents the relationship between the player and the game."I asked myself what the participants are looking for and whether they are trying to disturb" Every photograph Marier Rime takes has a different back ground so every photograph is unique. |

These image are of me and Bethany. I took these for more experience with the theme Disguise. All of these images follow the theme of disguise in different ways. For these images i chose a suitable background for my photographs. These photographs did not work as well as i thought they would. I think this was because we had limited resources, so we had to work with what we had and could find around us. I do not think these images are as good as previous experiments. The images of Bethany holding the mask to her face was inspired from my research of Inge Morath and Saul Steinburg, Those images could be improved greatly. To improve these images i could use better materials for the faces for example boxes or bags and i would also change the location so that i could go to a background that works well with these images. In these images i think the contrast between the foreground and the background do not go well together.

Whilst I took these images I kept in mind the research that I had previously done on Inge Morath and Saul Steinburg. Instead of using a brown bag I used a empty box, I turned the box inside out so that it is brown on the outside. I then drew onto the box using the face style that Inge Morath and Saul Steinburg drew on to the brown bags. Using the white background and a stall i set up my photography area and got my model to put the box onto their head and pose. To improve these images I could go to a location that has some furniture so that i could be more like the photographs created my Inge and Saul. I could also have more than one person in the image to make the image more interesting. After taking these photographs I used the Iphoto editing software to create a dark grey effect. These images give the person a new personality and face, this makes the image express something more than just a person. It makes the viewer ask more questions about the photographs. In the theme of disguise there is an effect of mystery and these images definitely portray that. To improve these images i would put my own twist on the images, i would make them informal by making these colour images rather than back and white, I would change the setting from a formal room to a canteen or dining area, also my models would be children rather than adults. Finally instead of using brown bags i would use boxes to add more of a childish feel.

Jose Romussi: Jose Romussi is a chilean photographer who studies landscape design. In the recent few years he has gained a significant following due to his screen prints and collages, both in which, he combines vintage black and white photographs with colourful forms of embroidery. Romussi takes the images, prints them out in black and white and then he glues on the embroidery and re-photographs the image when he is happy with his ajustments. Because of the black and white theme there is often a lot of contrast in his images which makes the image and the multi colour stand out to the viewer and catch their attention. |

For this set of experiments I tried to use different backgrounds to make these images more realistic and to put my own twist on the images that Inge Morath and Saul Steinburg did. I think these images would have been much better if i had the equipment to do so, I think the placement of the visual objects within the image could have been improved as some of these images were walking images, which caused some of the images to turn out blurry. I put different effects on these images to make them all look individual, The walking ones in the canteen all have the same effects so that they all look similar and follow the same theme. These images did not turn out how I imagined they would, i had a very specific idea in mind when researching Inge Morath and Saul Steinburg. Their work really inspired me and made my mind wonder with ideas and i enjoy looking and experimenting along the theme of their work. To improve these images i think i would; first, Take more time to plan the images on paper on on the website rather than planning it in my head so that when it comes to taking the photographs i know exactly were i want my models, the camera angles etc. Secondly I would try and find a better location that has more tones to add more contrast to the images. Finally i would makes these images tell a story, They would be a series of images that would chronological order showing the events in a day at school, for example lunch, lessons, break etc.

In this set of experiments i approached these images with the intention of putting my own twist on the images by Inge Morath and Saul Steinburg. I think i was successful in my approach as i developed my idea from my research of Saul Steinburg and Inge Morath but made it my own, I still kept similarities between their work and mine so that any viewers to my work can see my inspiration but not say that i have copied their work. I also added a lot of my personality into these images and all of these photos mean something to me, I have not just got out my camera ( phone in this case) and taken photographs with out thinking, I planed for about 4 weeks before taking these photographs thinking about every little detail in these photographs, for example were i wanted the photographs to be taken, the clothes i wanted my models to ware and what things the models were holding and making sure that they expressed something in me. The game the models are playing is my favourite game, the book one of my models is reading is my favourite book.
Simularities
I disguised my models faces and gave them new identities and personalities by hiding their faces and replacing them with faces that have been drawn. I used multiple models in some of my photographs, this fills up the images and contrasts against the negative space. There is a lot of contrast of colors in my photographs which you can also see in Inge and Sauls work. I based the face designs on the faces that were in the original set of photographs so that there is a visible link between the two sets of images. |
Differences
I took my photographs in color to give the photos more characteristics and look more appealing to the viewer. I used animals in a few of my photographs, as i wanted to be more creative and experiment with different models. I used a wider range of backgrounds. in Inge Morath and Saul Steinburgs work the photgraphs are taken inside were as my photographs are taken inside and outside . I used brown boxes instead of bags to adapt and change a visual aspect of the photograph. I changed the feeling of the photographs by making them more informal than the original the photographs as they are more formal. The photographs that i took have a lot more textures in them were as the original photographs are very smooth. |
I used my Iphone to capture these images, i used an app called filter in cam to add an effect to my photographs. The effect i used brightened up the image a little and made all of the colours in the images stand out more than they would in i did not use an effect. These images have a lot of different tones and textures which makes the images more eye catching. In some of my images i made light enter the room from different directions to create shadows in some of the images, creating a little more contrast in some of the images.

Within these images i used many different techniques. I used reflection, cropping, I tilted the camera lens to get different perspectives and views, Extreme close ups. I like these images because there is a large depth of field, this makes the background as much of a signifiant feature as the foreground. I chose to put these images in black and white so the images have a nice smooth calming feel, and when the viewer looks at these images there is more to look at than just the subjects, they have a wide range of components to look at within the photographs. These set of images were once again based on the research i did of Saul Steinbeck and Inge Morath, and one again i changed different aspects of their work and made it my own.
Optional Final Pieces

Final Piece 1
I chose these images to be my final pieces as they portray my theme perfectly, In a multiple of different ways. It was my first experiments and probably the set of images i am most proud of. The main reason I like these images is because they are my own, i have not had any influences, they are just my take on disguise. These images are going to be mounted and framed in A4, as i feel this will be the most effective way to display them.
Final piece 2
These are the images i chose to be my 2nd final piece, I chose these as my final pieces because they represented my theme perfectly and they have lots of similarities but are all very different have very unique in their own way. To present these images i am going to make origami boxes and insert them into them. I chose the boxes because I thought that not only the pictures but the presentation should also portray the theme, and scene as i used boxed for most of my images i thought that i should include it in the presentation as it has a significance to my theme.

Evaluation: These are my refined images of my second set of experiments. I prefer these images to the first set of these images as i was more risky and used different tools. In these set i feel that i presented my theme. I was lots more confident so i was able to experiment more. To improve these images i am going to create specific patterns on peoples faces with the different tools and see weather i like them and if there are any other ways of improving these images.
Display strategies
These are some display strategies that appealed to me. I would like to have my set of 4 images in frames. I would like the 4 images going i one diagonal line. Second set of 3 images I am having them in a cardboard origami box i made in a triangle shape with the darkest image at the top and the two lighter ones at the bottom.
Final evaluation
For this task I decided to explore the theme disguise. I chose this because as soon as I saw disguise, many ideas started flooding into my mind, the possibilities were endless. With all these possibilities in my head, i started to think about the experiments. After my research of the work of Saul Steinbeck and Inge Morath I was truly inspired and impressed by how the use disguise in their work.
Tallis Arts on Pinterest helped inspire me as it had many other examples of disguise which i used at the beginning of this project to complete my first set of final pieces. Tallis Arts also gave me some more photographers to research. I started this topic by doing artist research, as a good starting base to begin my experiments on. My initial research on Saul Steinbeck and Inge Moraths series of images 'masquerade' was my main inspiration for the topic. These artists influenced me to think about the different materials i can use to create different effects. By experimenting witht eh different materials i could look at the different textures that the materials create within the image. Through this research i completed one of my final pieces, which i am very very happy about. I also did artist research on Ralph Meatyard, Jose Rumussi, Marier Rime. This project helped me learn and develop new skills that i have not used before, such as photo shop. I used photo shop on multiple occasions. I used photo shop to create a series of images which helped me learn how to use the application, this means that i have an increased knowledge of Photoshop and i will be able to confidently use it in the future. Using photoshop increased my rage of techniques that i have used during this topic.

My first set of final Images was Based on work that i had found on Pinterest and Masters of Photography, These images were in the first set of experiments that i did on this project, but these images are my favorite of all the images I took within this theme. For these images I used my sister as a model and took images of her in different ways: the first image I used eyeliner to draw a chess board pattern on her face, I then took a picture of her on my iphone and used a filter app on my phone to add a grey tone to the image. The second image, i drew a mouth the same size as my sisters chin following her face line and added a pair of american flag sun glasses, i used the same camera and filter app to add a quite neutral tone, which has a slight orange tone in. The third image I got my sister to blow bubbles towards the camera, this took a lot of attempts but finally i managed to find an image that covers the majority of her face and had a textured effect on the image. Once again i used the filter app on my phone to add a very neutral toned filter just to add a little effect .For the final image i got my sister to tilt her hair over her face, put a pair on black sunglasses on and a Raccoon hat on. I added the hat to add contrast to the image, i thought this work extremely well and it complimented the orange toned background I added using my filter app.
My second piece is influenced by my research on the work of Saul Steinberg and Inge Morath, This set of images were the most refined images i worked on. carried on the box theme through my whole theme in my first final piece. Including for the presentation . I am presenting my images in Boxes that i made in class. my other images are being presented in A4 frames, and each photograph is given a title. I have used a very similar material that the artist used to cover the faces of the models. I used cardboard boxes and they used brown paper bags. I also used a back and white filter over the original images to create the same effect that the artists creates. All of my final images, were school based. The final thing in this series that i did similar tot he original artists is that i placed me models in very natural situations, so eating lunch and walking to class ect.
When working on my work based on the research from Saul Steinberg and Inge Morath. I had too make lots of decisions when developing my work. I started the series my using a piece of paper with a cartoon face drawing on i. I then looked back at the image realising that i would have to change the material used to a more sturdy material that i would be able to re- use multiple times through out the experimentation period. I decided to go with a cardboard box. I also had to decide on the application i would use to create the different effects. I used multiple effects during these experiments. I used an effect to create a bolder colour within my images for some of the experiments. But then i decided to develop the different tones and colours i wanted to use, so i changed it to back and white. The change in colour made the images have more contrast and would also create more tone and texture within the images. During this disguise project i also used photoshop multiple times to change the appearance when editing the features of peoples faces. I used lots of different tools on photoshop, for example the liquify tool and the dodge tool. Deciding to use the different tools on the different people helped me achieve the look i wanted to create for each image. Each of these changes i made to my worked helped me to refine and develop and refine my work.
