UNIT 1 EVALUATION
An artist i feel that really inspired my work was Laura Williams who i came across on pinterest whilst researching work within the Absurd unit. I gained knowledge about how to use the theme of reflection in multiple ways to create different effects within a series of images. After evaluating the different ways in which she used reflection i decided to incorporate some of these into my own images. For example reflecting the segment of the background covered by the subject of the image onto the reflective surface gives the illusion of emptiness within the image. As well as this, i was inspired by how Aneta Ivanova uses layering images over the side profile of different people she created a double exposure within her images. I found this artist on pintrest whilst searching for themes to use within my my contast topic. I decided to use Pic monkey, a photo editing website to create a similar effect within my images. I focused on using a wide range of formal elements within my images for example line, contrast, tone and focus within my images in order to create the most successful images. During my abstraction topic i was inspired by the work of the Starn twins, who i found within a book called 'Flora Photographia', they used use fragments within their images in order to give their images a more abstract effect. I used this inspiration to create a final piece, i made this final piece by using an app which allowed me to move the locations of different elements within the image to a new location, which also added line and texture into my images.
I feel that the use of reflection was the most successful theme within unit one as it was a common theme which was used in almost every topic within unit one and also created the most successful out comes within my topics, for example reflection was used through out the Absurd topic. I used reflection to emphasise signs within my work as well as to increase the depth of field within my images. Reflection was used within my final piece during the absurd topic. Reflection has also been used as a way to increase the number of formal elements within my images, for example within my disguise topic captured a reflection of my subjects standing on the floor, more lines, tones and contrast has been added to these images as a result of the use of reflection within my images.
I used photoshop on multiple occasions within each topic in order to carefully refine and develop my images until i reached the point when i created the ideal image which had been developed fully and could not be improved any more, for example i used the layering tool when layering the duplicate photo over the reflective surface within my Absurd topic. I also used photo editing software in order to develop my images, for example pic monkey, which was used within my contrast topic to layer the background images over the side profile of my subjects which would resultantly create the double exposure effect within my images as well as this i was able to add colour effects to my images for example black and white, which helped me to increase the contrast within my images, and the fragments app which was used in my abstraction topic to move and adjust segments of my images in order to create a developed image. In order to decide on how to develop my images i thought about the different formal elements within my images and how i was able to add more into my images. I also thought about each individual element within my images and how i could change them in order to improve the image. I used a large amount amount of experimentation in order to pick out likes and dislikes within an image in order to begin the development process. After each experiment and refinement i would repeat the evaluation process picking out aspects within the images that were effective and aspects that were not and then act on the 'Even better if''s,' As a result of this process i would reach the point where i would create an ideal image that i am happy with, that has been fully developed. I also experimented with the camera settings, i repeatedly was adjustig the aperture settings in order to create the best images i possible could.
For my first personal project disguise, I created two final pieces, the first of which was a series of four images of a woman, who's face has been hidden in multiple ways, this image was very successful as each image follows a similar theme however have a different overall look that still compliments the others, I created themes images at the beginning of the project. These images were made using a photo editing app which gave the images an effect,. experimented with focus within these images as some of the images are focused on other elements of the photo rather than the subject of the photograph for example the bubbles, this was in order to draw attention away from the subject to further more disguise them. My second final piece was influenced by the work of Inge Morath and Saul Steinberg, this final piece was a fully developed piece consisting of three images all black and white with three disguised subjects, each of which have a different expression on their faces. These images have a large amount of : contrast, line, tones, shadow, focus within the images. All of these images have a large depth of field and are unique i chose these as my final piece as they are well developed they are effective and i feel they perfectly represent my ideas on the disguise topic. Think that these images worked well as final pieces and were exactly what i had imagined when thinking about my aims for this topic.
For my second personal project, contrast, I create one final piece which used a range of techniques and processes to make, for example I used a range of technology to make, such as pic monkey, a photo editing website. as well as using different applications in order to change to colour of the image to black and white, i did this in order to add contrast to the images. I aimed to include a large range of formal elements within my images and i feel that i successfully achieved this aim to the best of my ability, each image contains at least two formal elements. Line and contrast are the two most frequent elements within the images in my final piece.
For my third personal project, abstraction, i created three final pieces two of which were based on my research from the Starn twins, the first final piece was two images, that had been cut into regular square segments and then re formed alternating image. These images contained a large amount of contrast and line, as well as shadow, tones reflection. which made the images more successful. I decided to use these images as a final piece due to the fact that they were fully developed and refined after an artist research. the second final piece was made using a mobile app, and was also made with iphoto which i used to change the overall colour of the image in order to increase the contrast within the image. I also was able to adjust how dark/ light i wanted the image to be. The third final piece within the abstraction topic I took a series of images purely focusing on the formal elements. I created images that focused on reflection, line contrast, and light. these images were edited using a photo editing app in which i changed the tones within the images in order for the images to be as successful as possible. I think that each of the individual final pieces were successful and made for an overall successful topic.
For my final personal project, Absurd I created one fully developed final piece which was inspired from my research on Laura Williams, this final piece was made using a large range of digital media. I used a digital camera to take these image in which i was changing the aperture of the camera in order to have the most successful outcome. I used photoshop to layer the images within each image as well as using iphoto in order to change the colour of the overall image to black and white in order to increase the contrast within the images. Each image within this final piece was fully developed, i am most proud of these images as they were the most complex images to make and i feel that these were the most effective images within all the personal projects. I also feel that they were an accurate representation on the Absurd topic as well as being the ideal images that i had envisioned on creating when first exploring the Absurd topic.
